What is Deep Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation?
Electrical currents flowing through a stimulating coil generate brief but powerful magnetic pulses, inducing an electric field in the brain, sufficient to depolarize cortical neurons and activate neural networks. This is based on Faraday’s Law in which magnetic fields induce intracranial electrical field using electromagnetic induction.
A significant unmet need exists in the treatment of psychiatric and addiction disorders. Current treatment options, such as pharmacotherapy, psychotherapy, and electroconvulsive therapy, are not sufficient for a substantial population of patients.
Deep TMS features unique, patented H coils that are fitted into a helmet, which is secured snugly to the patient’s head during the treatment. Deep TMS has been FDA cleared for the treatment of Major Depressive Disorder since 2013, obsessive compulsive disorder since 2018, and Smoking Cessation since 2020, and has now received an expanded indication for other disorders.
Deep TMS versus rTMS
Both are brain stimulation therapies, but differ in how they target the brain rTMS targets brain surface areas, while Deep TMS uses a different coil design to stimulate deeper and broader brain regions. Hence Deep TMS may be more effective for treatment-resistant conditions.
Advantages
- Purley outpatient treatment
- Greater ease-of-use for clinicians
- Superior patient comfort
- Cushioned, cooled helmet, allows patient to retain mobility without compromising treatment accuracy

Post Stroke rehabilitation
Treatment-resistant patients are another group that can benefit from Deep TMS. Deep TMS has even greater effect within a real-life setting: a study relying on data of over 1000 participants treated for depression found that roughly 75% achieved a positive clinical response, with one out of two participants achieving remission.
Major Depressive Disorder
The only FDA-cleared TMS system that stimulates deeper and broader to more effectively alleviate symptoms of treatment-resistant depression
Stimulates brain areas associated with depression using the H1 Coil
Targets neuronal pathways related to control of motivation, reward, and pleasure—dorsolateral prefrontal cortex (DLPFC)
The only independent RCT comparing the H-Coil with medication, Figure-8 coil with medication, and medication alone demonstrated superior outcomes for Deep TMS
In real clinical practice settings, the majority of treatment-resistant depression patients have benefitted from Deep TMS
Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder
The only TMS device with clinically proven efficacy for OCD backed by a double-blind, multicentre, sham-controlled trial and extensive post-marketing data Innovative, non-invasive solution to Treat OCD Utilizes the H7 coil to stimulate the CSTC circuit involved in inhibition of impulsive behavior—specifically the anterior cingulate cortex and medial prefrontal cortex
Significant improvement in a shorter period than typical medication protocols
In real clinical practice settings, the majority of treatment-resistant OCD patients have achieved meaningful symptom reduction
A stimulating solution to smoking and substance abuse disorders
The stimulation is aimed at lateral prefrontal cortex and the deeper-lying insula
Effective not only for smoking cessation but also for treating a wide range of substance and behavioural addictions.
Post-Stroke Rehabilitation
Current commercial products treat only post-stroke motor plasticity by mechanical, robotic and electrical means
Deep TMS addresses the root cause of post-stroke disability—brain plasticity—and is synergetic with other methods
The only TMS system that stimulates deeper and broader to more effectively target neurons within underactive or damaged areas of the brain
Primary motor cortex is considered a promising intervention for post-stroke motor rehabilitation
Deep TMS has repeatedly demonstrated efficacy and safety in multiple sham controlled clinical studies for upper and lower limb function
Deep TMS Systems are designed to offer flexibility and ease of use
› The design of the H-Coil allows for patients to be stationary or active
› Patients can be in a wheelchair, upright, or even on a stationary bike
› Can be combined with other rehabilitation treatments
